Beware of Increased Phishing Attempts

This month, a nationwide security incident occurred at Instructure, the vendor that operates Canvas. The incident appears to be resolved, however it affected thousands of higher education institutions across the country. With this type of high-profile outage, there is often an increased risk for related phishing attempts.

Please be alert and use caution when interacting with emails that:

  • Have unusual From or Reply-To fields
  • Are unsolicited
  • Create a sense of urgency
  • Have grammatical errors and misspellings
  • Link to pop-ups that don’t match the printed text

Visit the UW-Madison IT website for more resources that explain what phishing attempts look like and how you can protect yourself.
