Bird-Safe Glass Partnerships Take Flight
At UW–Madison, bird collisions are most likely to happen where glass meets green: lakeside residence halls, mirrored facades near trees, and glass that reflects a false sky.
To address this, UW–Madison installed bird-safe decals on Dejope’s most hazardous windows last summer. The retrofit was made possible through the UW–Madison Green Fund, which supports student-led environmental initiatives, in collaboration with faculty from Forest and Wildlife Ecology, students from Audubon Society UW–Madison, BCC volunteers, and staff from University Housing, FP&M, and the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance.

Leanpath - A Forkful of Sustainability
All-you-care-to-eat Dining Markets at the UW have seen a rapid reduction in kitchen food waste thanks to cutting-edge technology known as Leanpath.
This technology tracks the type of food, the food weight, and the reason the food is being discarded. The data is then used to produce helpful statistics and assign financial cost and environmental factors to food scraps. Through this process, Dining staff can critically evaluate foods that are commonly wasted and are encouraged to make more strategic purchasing decisions.
Dining continues to advance the sustainability of campus with the help of students, staff, and faculty, in order to support the UW’s recently released sustainability goals.
