Having guests over for Halloween

🗓️ Policy Active: October 30 - November 1
Halloween weekend brings lots of visitors and activities to campus and the surrounding community. To keep you, any guests, and staff safe, University Housing has special policies in place.
  • You may only register one guest for the weekend for a $100 fee
  • Guests can't be UW–Madison students, residents of other residence halls, or have other housing/lodging options in Dane County
  • No unregistered guests are permitted in any residence hall during Halloween weekend
  • Registered guests must carry a photo ID and be escorted by their host at all times
  • Guest privileges may be revoked without refund of the guest fee if Housing or UW–Madison policies are violated

Building access & identification

All residence halls will be locked through the entire weekend. Make sure to carry your Wiscard and room key with you at all times. Some residence halls will have ID check stations upon entry on Friday and Saturday night. In this case, you’ll need to show your Wiscard to staff when entering.

Increased staff presence

You'll also notice more Housing staff in your hall throughout the weekend. Additional House Fellows and professional staff will be on duty to monitor common areas and make more frequent rounds. It's important that you follow all instructions and requests from staff during the weekend. If you have any questions, contact Residence Life.

Milk Vending Machine in Tripp Hall, 1950s
🗓️ ~ 1950s
Nothing to see here, just a group of students huddled around the milk vending machine in Tripp Hall! It’s believed that this machine and one in Adams Hall averaged 300-400 quarts of milk per day back in the 50’s.

Maintenance Minute: Safety & security

To help us keep your community and residence hall safe, here are some precautions you can take each day:
  • Carry your keys and Wiscard at all times
  • Lock your room door when you or your roommates are away and when you’re sleeping
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and don’t let strangers in to your hall
  • Walk in groups, especially at night
  • When traveling, let someone know where you’re going and when to expect you back
  • Report any suspicious activity or crimes immediately, or dial 911 for emergencies.

Barnard! Built in 1913, Barnard Residence Hall is the oldest UW–Madison residence hall still in use as housing! It's stood the test of time with historical architecture and a convenient location in the heart of campus. Just this month, Barnard turned a whopping 113 years old!
